As part of the celebration of the DEEP (Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project) network 10th anniversary, a very special event was held to celebrate at Plas Tan y Bwlch. Together with Caban (Bangor University) and Like Minded (Mold) DEEP groups, Dementia Actif organised a day to celebrate the success of the North Wales DEEP groups. The event was an opportunity for group members and families to come together to celebrate their achievements and showcase the value of learning, sharing, and supporting people affected by dementia.
We had the privilege of welcoming people affected by dementia from Scotland, Northern Ireland, England and across Wales. Around 80 people attended with some professionals also present. The programme included presentations from the 3 DEEP groups in North Wales, a discussion panel on the value of peer support from people living with dementia, and then a variety of workshops including art, dancing, poetry and a mindfulness walk. The full programme can be seen here.
4 words to convey the day from delegates and the Dementia Actif team: -
Quote of the day: - “What has been achieved over the last 10 years gives hope for what can be achieved in the next 10 years”
From a person living with dementia, referring to her life after diagnosis:- “I can’t tell you a better time I’ve had in my life that’s because of the peer support that I have received “
For those staying the night at Plas tan-Y-Bwlch local singer songwriter Gai Toms for entertaining the guests with Welsh music, local stories and the opportunity to sing along! What a fantastic way to end a wonderful event.
Emma Quaeck, Dementia Actif Gwynedd said “ It was an honour to host this very special event and a joy to see so many people affected by dementia coming together in such a relaxed, honest and positive way. As a team we learnt so much from listening to what people had to say, it was truly inspirational. People loved the venue which we did out best to ensure was Dementia Friendly and enjoyed experiencing a bit of Welsh culture.”
