Dementia Friendly Communities

Dementia Friendly Communities is also an Alzheimer’s Society initiative. A Dementia Friendly Community is a city, town or village where people with dementia are understood, respected and supported. This work is important in helping people live well with dementia and remain part of the community. This may involve supporting people to continue to take part in activities that they have always enjoyed knowing they have the support and understanding of those around them.

Currently Gwynedd has two towns who have gained recognition of ‘Working towards becoming Dementia Friendly’. Porthmadog has a steering group who have created a pledge form where local businesses and organisations are to commit to working towards actions to complete those pledges. They also run Dementia Friends sessions for individuals and groups in the community.
